Tips To Help Kids With Teenage Bulimia Nervosa

Children that are dealing with teenage bulimia nervosa may need some assistance in order to help them deal with this behaviour. Parents need to have a full understanding about how to help their children deal with this condition so that the can learn to consume healthy food in an appropriate manner. When parents know how to help their children they can work together with their child in order to help them get over this disorder.

By being understanding and open in communication, parents may be able to get honest answers from their children. This increases the likelihood of success and may help the child get the help that they need.

First of all, parents need to learn all that they can about this disorder. Once parents fully understand what teenage bulimia is, they can have honest conversations with their children about their behaviour. Parents will then be able to also ask the child if he or she is having the urge to binge.

Parents may also want to find ways to decrease boredom in the home and outside of the home. This can increase the chances of the child being successful. This is especially true if the parents are noticing that the child tends to have the urge to binge when he or she is bored. Parents can plan activities with their child. This can decrease boredom and give the parent an opportunity to monitor the child?s behaviour.

Next, parents need to find a way to decrease the opportunity to purge once the binging has taken place in case of teenage bulimia. Parents need to understand that the purging may take place by inducing vomiting, taking a laxative, or even using diuretics.

It will be very important for the parents to make sure that their child does not have access to laxatives or diuretics in order to decrease the likelihood of purging. Younger children and teens should not have laxatives or diuretics unless they are suffering from a medical issue. Therefore, if parents suspect that their child is using these measures, they need to go through the child?s belongings in order to get rid of these things.

Open and honest communication is often the best way to help the child understand that they are suffering from teenage bulimia. If the child feels that he or she is being attacked then he or she may engage in these behaviours even more because they feel guilty.

That is why it is best for the parents to fully understand the disorder and help the child understand that they realize the disadvantages and risks associated with their condition.

Parents also need to listen to their child without offering accusations or consequences. This gives parents the opportunity to listen for underlying issues that may be affecting the child. Then the parent can determine if more intense solutions need to be sought.

Parents may not want to admit that counseling services may be needed. Parents often worry that they will be blamed for the behaviour. However, parents need to realize that there may be times when they cannot help their child and outside sources need to be called upon. Parents need to remember that this is about their child, not them!

In the book ?Solving Teenage Problems? several other tips have been discussed to deal with teenage bulimia. Parents need to realize that bulimia nervosa can be caused due to teenage stress and depression, hence it is important to deal with the root problem. Various tips to deal with teenage stress and depression have also been provided in the book
